A Showcase of work: by Rachael Hilliker

Here you will find examples of my work during the MAET program. I have tried to highlight examples of my work that I am most proud of. One of my personal focuses in this degree program has been creativity. I am hoping these examples show how much I have attempted to think outside of the box.

Creativity in Teaching and Learning

This was one of my favorite classes because I was able to really focus on my love of creativity. Throughout the class we focused on repurposing ideas in multiple formats while being creative. This particular assignment above was challenging but very rewarding. I had to create an elevator pitch (less than 2 mins long) that made the case for creativity in the classroom and incorporated everything I had learned during the semester.

Technology and Leadership

I really enjoyed learning about leadership with technology in this class. Identifying what type of leader you are and what type you aspire to be is an important step in determining the types of projects you want to lead in. My main project in this class was to identify a technology problem and, as a leader, identify and execute (if possible) a solution to that problem. In the beginning of the semester I agreed to lead a science fair at a local elementary. In prior years, turnout had not been what the principal envisioned. Through a plan that incorporated social media marketing, email hype, QR coded flyers and a website dedicated to the event I was able to bring attendance and engagement to where the principal wanted. You can view the final paper that illustrates my planning and execution here. Below is a picture of the take home flyer I created with additional QR codes for example projects that related to the exhibits at the fair. In the post-event assessment, it was clear that the students and parents both enjoyed this.

Learning in School and Other Settings

This class was exciting to me because I was able to create a lesson plan and then make educational observations. These observations allowed me to see whether or not my lesson would be an appropriate way for students to learn a specific objective in the method I had planned. Since I was not in a classroom environment, I was unable to have students execute the lesson. However, by doing a case study of available videos of students learning with this technology I was able to make some good assumptions and hypothesize on how the execution of the lesson would be carried out. I compiled a livebinder of the videos that I analyzed and stated my observations in my blog in this post. Here is my live binder:

Learning Technology Through Design

This assignment was done in advance of the final assignment (below -an educational website.) The subversive presentation was meant to "plant the seed" prior to the actual website. I did decide to incorporate this presentation into my final website although that was not a requirement of the assignment. In this presentation my hope was to motivate the student to want to see what additional information the website presented. For this reason, I put the presentation on the welcome page of the site.

Teaching K12 Students Online
Summer 2012

This class was one of the most challenging in the program for me. I began the class knowing that I would be creating an online course utilzing one of the Learning Management Systems we were exploring. I picked the one that I liked best and then realized that I would have to develop my own content as I could not draw from any classroom experience. A few weeks into the class I realized that the LMS could not do what I needed it to in order to organize the learning the way I had wanted. One of my goals in developing this Food Systems, Nutrition and Gardening class was to make it a mobile class. I wanted students to be able to take their devices into the garden, grocery store, etc. and complete the assignments. The original LMS I picked would not allow all of the types of technologies I was incorporating to be completed on a mobile device. In the end, I was extraordinarily pleased with the course I developed. To the right is a picture of part of the syllabus and below is the starting page in the course. Clicking on either of them will bring up a word document to open where you can get the login information for the online course.
